One of the most popular patrol innovations adopted by the university police department is the Police Bike Patrol Unit. In 1992, Oakland University became one of the first departments in the area to form and staff a unit assigned to mountain bike patrol. The Bike Unit is deployed for routine police patrol, and patrol at special events such as the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, the Concours d'Elegance, and the Gehringer Golf Tournament.

Community response to the Bike Unit has been uniformly positive, and the efforts of unit members have done much to further the department's commitment to Community Policing.
